Texas Hostels
The capital city of Texas, Austin is known for its environmentally-friendly ways and often eclectic traditions. The Austin hostel is located just outside of downtown Austin. Known as the Live Music Capital of the World, Austin has more music venues per capita than any other U.S. city, and is home to several annual music festivals, including the Austin Reggae Festival in April and the famous springtime film, music, and interactive festival known as South by Southwest. Austin is also known for its local art – the artsy South Congress district sponsors First Thursday events, when shops stay open late, artists sell their work and musicians play on the streets the first Thursday of every month. Austin is also known for its famous public swimming locations, including Deep Eddy Pool, the oldest man-made swimming pool in Texas, and Barton Springs Pool (located in Zilker Park), the nation’s largest natural pool in an urban area. Both pools are spring-fed and kept at 69 degrees for year-round swimming.
Located to the southeast of Austin, Galveston is a major tourist destination and historic gem, known for its miles of beach front and many cultural attractions. The Galveston hostel on the beach and within walking distance to the well-known Strand District, a National Historic Landmark District of Victorian era buildings that are now shops and restaurants. The Strand is home to two popular annual festivals, including the Mardi Gras festival and Dickens on the Strand, which celebrates the city’s Victorian past and the works of Charles Dickens. Another Galveston favorite is Moody Gardens, which features three pyramid attractions: the Aquarium, Rainforest, and Discovery Pyramids. The 12-story Aquarium Pyramid is one of the largest aquariums in the world, while the Rainforest Pyramid is a walk-through rainforest habitat with free-ranging animals, waterfalls, and other tropical sights. The Discovery Pyramid is dedicated to the exploration of science with numerous exhibits and hands-on activities.
Galveston weather is warm, with average summer highs in the high 80s and lows in the high 70s. Winter temperatures average in the mid 60s to low 50s. Rain is evenly spread throughout the year, with an average of two to four inches falling each month. Austin weather is a bit more humid and hot, with average summer temperatures above 90 degrees through September. Winter is dry and mild, but with the occasional ice storm and very rare snowfall.
