North Carolina Hostels

Pembroke, North Carolina is home to the University of North Carolina – Pembroke, as well as the tribal seat of the Lumbee Indian Tribe, the ninth largest tribe in the United States. The Pembroke hostel is located in this small, historic town that celebrates its Native American heritage with several annual events. The Lumbee Homecoming, held in late June through early July, is an annual time of reflection and togetherness, while the play Strike at the Wind is performed every Friday and Saturday in July and August. Strike at the Wind is the true story of the Lowry War, a seven-year war waged against the Old South by a clan of North Carolinian Native Americans and African Americans after the father and brother of Henry Barry Lowry, then 17 years old, were murdered by the Confederate Home Guard. Pembroke’s Native American Resource Center is renowned for its exhibits of authentic Native American artifacts, arts, and crafts, focusing on the Lumbee Tribe. The nearby Lumber River, a blackwater river perfect for canoeing and fishing, is nestled among scenic cypress-gum swamps and hardwood forests. Pembroke is about two hours driving time from North Carolina beaches, Raleigh, Wilmington, and Myrtle Beach.

Southern North Carolinian weather is characterized by rainy springs, hot and humid summers, comfortable falls, and mild winters. February is typically the coldest month, with average temperatures in the mid 50s, while summer average temperatures are in the 90s.
