What are Hostels?
Ever dream of staying in a historic California lighthouse? Or sleeping in a cozy, authentic log cabin? Hostels vary in size, style, and location, but all Hostelling International (HI) hostels share some important features – HI hostels are always inexpensive and enjoyable, and meet the HI Quality Standards requirements for comfort, cleanliness, security, and privacy. So whether you’re staying in a New England snowboarding house, a Midwest working farm, or any other hostel in HI-USA’s nearly 80 hostels throughout the United States, you can rest assured knowing your hostel meets HI’s highest standards.
Hostels offer accommodations for a wide variety of travelers. It’s a common misconception that only young people stay in hostels. HI-USA hostels welcome travelers of all ages, including individual guests, families, and groups, although the majority of HI-USA hostel guests range from age 18 to 35. HI hostels offer shared accommodations in multi-bed rooms, with separate quarters for men and women. Some hostels also offer private and family rooms, which should be reserved in advance where available.
HI-USA hostels are convenient and well-equipped. All of our hostels provide complete bedding; linens are often included in the overnight stay price, or are available for rental. Most hostels offer self-service kitchens or cafeterias equipped with basic cooking utensils that guests may use to prepare their own meals – and ultimately save travel money – as well as dining areas, secure storage, and common areas. Some hostels also have laundry facilities, travel libraries, and concierge service, or even such amenities as hot tubs, swimming pools, barbeque areas, or direct beach access. Most urban hostels feature 24-hour access and are handicapped accessible.
Hostel rates differ according to their location and size – big city hostels can run about $25 to $35 per night, while smaller hostels can be as little as $10 to $14 per night. Staying at hostels is not only affordable – allowing visitors to spend their travel money on other things – but also gives you a way to meet other travelers and experience first-hand the flavor and culture of your destination.
